We at LY surfboards love it when it goes flat... our rocker line, that is...
With the success of the Robot and Cyborg models we’ve been spending time forging ways to make more of our surfboards go even faster, even looser, in even more conditions.
With the help of certain team riders and good ol’ trial and error we’ve refined the rocker and concaves from the cyborg model and increased and smoothed out the tail rocker so that the lift begins a little further in front of the front fins. This allows the surfer to gain early entry into waves, immediate acceleration and high performance surfing over the tail.
“The Cyborg is such a great board in many conditions and has more ‘shortboard’ characteristics than other small wave or fish models, but due to its wide, flat tail plan shape it can be a handful in more gutsy surf. We also found that when we hopped onto our shortboards or step up boards we really noticed the extra curve in the bottom shape. I suppose we’d gotten used to the early/easy entry into waves and the quick acceleration and easy glide over flat parts of the wave.” Luke added.
We’ve also been testing the cyborg and other Flyte Path boards in hollower and more demanding conditions realising that we can ride shorter boards (with a few tweaks to deck foils) than we’d thought we needed before, due to the fact that we were paddling into the waves earlier, and getting ‘off the mark’ quicker. This is where Flyte Path Rocker Technologies comes in to take performance surfing to another level.
We can apply the technology to your favourite LY Surfboards model and with a few small extra modifications to your existing dimensions, ie reduce the length of your board by two inches, add one quarter to a half an inch to the width and draw the centre thickness further out to the rails (but keeping the same rail size/shape). Your surfing will take on a whole new path... faster, smoother, looser.
“Yeah, but you need a big board in big surf” true, in some conditions like when the swell is thick and travelling really fast such as Sunset beach, Hawaii then you do need a big thick board to build forward momentum to get into the waves, we’re not trying to revolutionise the whole surfing world or re-invent the wheel, just to increase performance levels in more everyday conditions.
Flyte Path Rocker Technology boards are not just ‘more of the same small flat boards cut from the middle of a mini mal blank with thick or no foil with a groovy tail shape’, these are the most modern and most high performance shapes modified slightly for the next level of surfing.

Luke has been voted the best young shaper in thins months Carve Magazine.
The November issue (111) of Carve magazine is out now, and our man Luke has been voted the UK's best young shaper. The shaping community were the only ones to vote on this category, and its great to hear that Luke's peers feel the same as his customers do - Luke is a fantastic shaper. Luke is very proud of this award, as would like to thank all who voted for him.
It's been in the pipeline for a while now, and finally, we're able to announce that Luke will be shaping Rawson Surfboards here in the UK.
Luke is now able to offer custom shaped, Pat Rawson surfboards shaped right here in the factory. For those not in the know, Pat is pretty much a living legend when it comes to surfboard shaping. Having specialized in making guns for the worlds elite surfers, he's also got a great line of shortboard shapes up his sleeve. For more info on the boards Luke and Pat are offering here in the UK jump over to patrawson.lukeyoungshapes.co.uk. There's a good interview with Pat at surfermag
Pat will be visiting the factory a few times a year, his next visit is planned for early next year. The main reasons for the visits are to work on new collabarations and to further mentor Luke, but he'll also be available to shape a limited number of custom boards while he's here. Get in touch if you want a genuine Pat Rawson shaped board.
The Cyborg - a new model based on the Robot.
Following on the success of the Robot this summer comes the rise of the 'cyborg'. Still utilising low rocker throughout and a wide plan shape, the cyborg is a little more shortboard oriented. See models for the full spec.
Baru gets her first wettie...
Luke spashed out on a new wetsuit for his daughter Baru, on her 1/2 year birthday. It's pink and gray with a shark on it...
Go Baru!
New arrivals
Nick Lloyd and Paul Gunning have joined the ranks of team LY. Nick hails from the Croyde area of North Devon and Paul is leaving plastic-not-so-fantastic surfboards behind, and rejoining the team.
At long last, team rider Dan Hapgood has tied the knot with long time girlfriend Liz Kneil. The couple were wed in the historic Rame church, with the reception being held up at Maker heights. Thanks to all those that attended, and for making the day as special as possible. The bar staff reckon it was the craziest wedding they've ever had!
Luke and local kneelo charger Bryn have been beavering away under cover of darkness at another alternative wave riding craft. More details coming soon...
2009 looks set to be a pretty good year for skilled local shapers. The collapse of several larger companies mass producing pop out style boards, along with surfers in general demanding a quality product that lasts, has lead to an increase in orders on this time last year.
